The first few weeks of the 2018-2019 school year have been a whirlwind on campus. Here at The Elm, we’ve been working hard to put out lots of new and exciting content, and with a few copies of the paper under our belt, it’s time for some introductions.
Meet the editors of The Elm, the hardworking students behind Washington College’s favorite newspaper!
Abby Wargo | Editor-in-Chief
Abby Wargo is in charge here at The Elm. She is currently a junior majoring in English, with double minors in Creative Writing and Journalism, Editing, and Publishing. She has always loved writing, but didn’t have a school newspaper in high school. She says that when she came to Washington College, journalism, and The Elm, just felt like a natural fit. When asked what she is most excited for this year, Abby said, “Watching the sections — and the writers — learn and grow, as well as planning for the April fools issue.” Her favorite animals? Pugs!
Cassy Sottile | News Editor
Cassy Sottile is one of our two News Editors this year. She is a junior working on an English and History Double Major with a Double Minor in Journalism, Editing, and Publishing and Theatre. “I love writing,” Cassy said, “and have always dreamed of going into journalism. I want to be able to get news out and gets the facts straight for people who aren’t informed.” Her favorite sections to read are News and Opinion, and her favorite animal is a turtle.
Lori Wysong | News Editor
Lori is The Elm’s second News Editor. She is a senior History major with Spanish and European Studies minors. “I transferred here last year and was looking for a way to get involved on campus,” Lori said, “I enjoy writing and having conversations with interesting people, so The Elm seemed like a good idea.” She is excited to get news out to the campus. Fittingly, her favorite animal is either the Loris or the Lorikeet.
Katy Shenk | Student Life Editor
Katy Shenk is a sophomore History major and our Student Life Editor! When asked why she wanted to join The Elm, Katy said, “I always wanted to be a part of my high school newspaper, but I was involved in too many other activities. When I got to college I thought joining the newspaper would be a great way to be more aware of the people and events on campus. I took a history class last semester that required a significant amount of primary source research in The Elm. That class made me realize just how important The Elm is in writing the first draft of Washington College history for the future.” Her favorite section to read is Letters to the Editor, when we get them! She is excited this year to “find creative ways to feature individual students and their stories.” Her favorite animal is a peacock.
Erin Caine | Lifestyle Editor
Erin Caine is the Lifestyle Editor this year! She is a senior English major with a Creative Writing minor. Her favorite section in The Elm to read is Student Life. Erin says that she got involved in The Elm because being a part of the whole process of the paper “feels more challenging and rewarding.” She is excited to gain new writers under her section. When asked her favorite animal, Erin answered, “Orangutan. Those gentle, soulful eyes… Phenomenal.”
Sophie Grabiec | Sports Editor
Sophie Grabiec is The Elm’s Sports Editor. She is a junior English and Education double major with a minor in Secondary Education Studies. She joined the paper due to her passion for editing and creating. Her favorite section of The Elm to read is opinion. This year, Sophie is excited to “cover all of the winning games!” Her favorite animals are dogs.
Shannon Moran | Blog and Social Media Editor
Shannon is The Elm’s Social Media Editor this year, as well as the editor for “The Leaf,” The Elm’s blog! She is a senior English major with Creative Writing and Music minors. Her favorite section to read is News. Shannon wanted to get involved with The Elm because she appreciates the importance of student journalism, and wanted to be a part of a publication that mattered to its readers and community. What is she most excited for this year? A cute Instagram! Her favorite animals are goats (baby goats especially).
Alexandra Weiss | Web Editor
Alex Weiss is the Web Editor for The Elm. She is a senior English Major with a Secondary Education minor. Her favorite section to read is News. When asked why Alex wanted to join The Elm, she said, “I wanted to help the campus in a way that I felt benefits all students and I think a student newspaper is crucial to WAC.” What is she most excited for this year? “Haunting the Pub House on Tuesday nights when I schedule posts for the online version of The Elm.”
Mary Sprague | Copy Editor
Mary Sprague is one of our Copy Editors at The Elm. She is a junior
English major with Creative Writing and Journalism, Editing and Publishing minors. To Mary, “seeing the fantastic, diligent work of the past Elm teams” inspired her to join the staff. She is looking forward most to reading and editing the April Fool’s edition! Her favorite section to read is Lifestyle and her favorite animals are elephants.
