WCVB and AXO’s Purple Out Game

Tonight at the Johnson Fitness Center starting at 7pm, Alpha Chi Omega and the Washington College Volleyball team will be coming together to sponsor “Purple Out”, an event to bring awareness to Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The philanthropy chair for AXO, Jen Walls, explained the importance of this event to her sorority, “We are promoting this “Purple Out” event because the color purple is associated with domestic violence awareness and we want to start the conversation of the issue of relationship abuse within a college community, which is often difficult to discuss. Nearly 43% of dating women report experiencing violent and abusive dating behaviors in college and women between the ages of 16-24 typically experience the highest rate of intimate partner violence, almost triple the national average. This “Purple Out” is an opportunity to educate the campus community so together we can be active in promoting healthy relationships.”

At the JFC, the AXO’s will “purple out” the gym with purple decorations and will provide purple accessories for all the participants at the game. Along with the purple spirit, AXO will be providing free cookies, lemonade, a DVA information table with the #PutTheNailInIt campaign and a prize of a free T-shirt awarded to the most spirited, “purpled-out” participants! “I hope that people will walk away from the event with a better understanding of what domestic violence is and how it is an issue that effects all ages, genders, ethnicities, and socio-economic classes,” discussed Jen, “my hope is also that people will go forward with excitement about promoting healthy relationships!”
