AOII’s 10th Annual Queen of the Roses 5k

Mark your calendars for October 1st and come down to Wilmer Park for the 10th Annual Queen of the Roses 5k! The sisters of AOII commemorate and honor their sister, Jasmine Dora Queen, who passed away in 2008 from a pulmonary embolism by bringing on this 5k in her memory. Grace Peters, the 5k Chair, discussed the importance of this event to AOII and the WAC campus, “the Queen of the Roses 5k is one of the biggest annual events that AOII holds and is simply a celebration of life. It enables our chapter and our alum to come together and remember Jasmine, who added so much to our sisterhood and Washington College.”

This year is the 10th Anniversary of the Queen of the Roses 5k, making this event even more special to Jasmine’s family and friends. AOII’s advisor, Latoya Gatewood-Young, was a close friend of Jasmines and reflected on what the event means to her, “I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical when a fellow sister proposed the idea to start a 5k in memory of Jasmine. The fact we’re able to see the 10th anniversary amazes me! Jasmine Queen was like the big sister I never had and was one of the main reasons I decided to join Alpha Omicron Pi. She took me under her wing when I was a freshman and for that I am forever grateful.” Along with AOII, Jasmine was a member of the Cleopatra sisters and the softball team. “I was on campus during Peer Mentor training when I heard about her sudden death and since then I’ve been motivated to live life to the fullest, take risk, and cherish each day”, said Latoya, “I would like to personally thank the Sisters of AOII, Washington College students and the surrounding Chestertown community for help keeping Jasmine’s memory alive.”

During the event, you have the choice of running or walking and can win prizes in both categories! If you can’t come to the event or don’t want to run or walk, you can choose the option of being a “silent hero” where you donate money in place of you attending. All the proceeds from the Queen of the Roses 5k will go towards an AOII scholarship in Jasmine’s name! If you’re interested in running or walking or being a silent hero you can sign up at
