Training Ms. President

Unknown.jpegTraining Ms. President is a woman’s leadership conference that Washington College co-hosts with Goucher College and Hood College. Its focus is to get women to think about running for an elected office some day. It just held its second annual conference in mid November. Ten women from Washington College attended with help from Dr. Mellissa Deckman and Dr. Christine Wade. Both professors organized the event so our campus could be represented.

Senior Political Science major, Hailey M. Craig, had the great opportunity of attending the event, so I got to ask her a few questions.

How did you hear about Training Ms. President?

“I first heard about it last year when Dr. Deckman asked me to apply to attend however, I wasn’t able to go. So then she asked me to apply again this year since I’m a senior and it would be my last opportunity to go.”

Can you please explain a little bit about what the conference was like?

“It was 2 days. On Thursday night we went to a meet and great and a dinner at Goucher. It was really cool because Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, the mayor of Baltimore, spoke to us about her career and how she got there, and gave us some advice about how to be a woman in the political sphere. Then the second day we had 4 panels of successful women who are currently in office, have run for office, work for elected officials, or who are in the media covering politicians, who we had the opportunity to talk to. It was really interesting to get their perspective and advice. “

Do you have any advice for women who want to apply for Training Ms. President in the future?

“Keep a eye out for the emails, and keep and open mind about running for office someday no matter what you major is.”
