Every St. Patrick’s Day for as long as I can remember, my family and I celebrate with our traditional corned beef, potatoes, carrots, Irish soda bread, and cabbage (though I don’t eat the cabbage). Before, during, or after the meal, we always watch “The Quiet Man” starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. If you haven’t seen this classic, I highly recommend it. It has Maureen O’Hara: enough said.
Here’s the kicker—St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated during the Lenten Season. What this means for my family is that my dad gives up all sugar for 40 days and fasts—he eats nothing for 24 hours—for two days each week. Unfortunately, thanks to the way he scheduled his self-inflicted agony for this week, he ended up fasting on St. Patrick’s Day. Needless to say, we’ll be having our corned beef dinner and “Quiet Man” movie night on Saturday.
Thankfully, St. Patrick’s Day wasn’t a total loss for me. I got to hang out with my childhood friend, Alexandra Farrington, and her mom and her mom’s friend. There was wine and chips, so being the relatively simple creature that I am, I was happy. Not to mention with school and a two-and-a-half hour distance between us, it’s not every day I get to see my best friend, so it helped make my holiday just as special.
