Living off campus can have many benefits and is a great experience. However, one hardship I have come to realize that comes with living off campus is snow removal. When you live on campus you do not think much about all the work that has to be done to make the parking lots and walkways useable. When you live off campus you have to take care of that by yourself. If you are lucky, some friends may be willing to shovel your driveway for $40 and then you do not have to deal with it. But if you are not that lucky, or too cheap to pay someone to shovel your driveway, you have to do it yourself.
A good investment for off campus residents is some ice melt salt. Keep some handy so you can put it on your stairs and pathways. This will keep you from slipping on your way to your morning classes! Always have a good shovel to dig your way out of any serious snow and to help get your car unstuck. ACE Hardware has both ice melt and shovels if you do not already have some.
Before the snow comes get to the groceries store and stock up on essentials. You never know if the roads will be too bad to drive on. Also, make sure your car is in an O.K. location that is easy to pull in and out of incase you do need to drive somewhere. If the storm looks bad find your flashlights to prepare if the power goes out.
Overall just be prepared and ready to do a little work to get yourself dug out of any bad snow. Even though we did not get any snow this morning there could still be more storms to come!
