Last night, the sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha hosted their annual male pageant, Big Man On Campus. This wonderful night of entertainment, laughter, and men is one of my favorite events of the whole year. This year, eleven handsome gentlemen competed for the title of Big Man.
The show began with an opening dance routine performed by all the contestants. The boys showed off groovy dance moves to Gwen Stefani’s Wind It Up as they got the crowd wound up and excited for the show. After the opening number, the boys showed off their Halloween costumes. This was a new addition to the show, in place of the formal attire.
Next, each contestant performed for the talent portion. Gavin Donnelly’17 took us on an African safari, describing the largest animals in the world. Dave McBrien’16 shared some of his personal poetry. Phillip Villaverde’16 hit the “Quan” while Alex Smith’17 showed off what he learned from Barefoot Contessa and made salad for the judges. By the end of the talent portion it was hard to pick a favorite candidate.
After talent, it was time for the hard-hitting question and answer portion. Each contestant was asked a question by one of the ZTA sisters. Questions ranged from thought provoking to downright hilarious, as did the gentlemen’s answers. When this portion ended, the judges had some deliberating to do. While we waited, our hosts Kelsey and Nicole took entertainment suggestions from Twitter. The audience really enjoyed this opportunity of interaction.
In the end, there were four honorary awards but one Big Man. Best Legs went to Phillip Villaverde’16, Best Talent went to Alex Smith’17, Best Dressed to Ian Moore’17, and Best Costume to Taylor Frey’17. The ultimate title of Big Man On Campus went to Tyler Gibson’16. This was quite the entertaining evening all to benefit the ZTA philanthropy of breast cancer awareness and education. If you missed out this year, be sure to come next year! It is an event you won’t want to miss.
