Gym Etiquette

DSC_0029Going to the gym is a great way to stay fit, take a study break, and even hang out with friends. The JFC has so many amenities that allow you to get the most out of your workout. From treadmills, to bench presses, and even a Jacobs Ladder, the gym has it all. With 25% of the student body involved in varsity sports and an average size gym, it can feel a little cramped at times. When the gym is packed you may find it intimidating to workout; but if you know what you’re doing and respect the “gym etiquette” everyone can exercise in peace. As a frequent gym goer I have picked up on some of the most common dos and don’ts. It is always important to wipe down your equipment when you are finished because it helps keep everything sanitary. Also it is just a courtesy to others who use the equipment after you. Make sure to put things back where you got them so medicine balls, weights, and other equipment are not just lying around. And finally just try to be polite and considerate to others and you should have a pleasant gym experience.

Laura King’ 17 is an avid gym goer and knows a lot about gym etiquette. I asked her what some of her major pet peeves were and she said, “I don’t like when people stare at me while I’m working out, or when they try to talk to me when I have headphones on.” Laura mentioned that she also dislikes when other people at the gym take the weights she is using. It is all about sharing the gym with everyone and working together to workout! Laura suggests trying some of her favorite workouts, which are lifting weights and doing bar squats. And for those you us that prefer to hit the gym when there are not many other people present, Laura says to “Go between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. because many people are in class and the athletes have finished by then so the gym should be less crowded.”

Hopefully these tips will improve your gym experience and make you feel more comfortable. And if you want to learn more workouts and techniques WAC offers many different workout classes and you can even get a trainer. So head on down to the JFC and have a great workout!
